Unless there is a union agreement or employment contract to the contrary, employers generally reserve the right to amend or modify the employee handbook or other company policy. They usually have that reservation stated somewhere in the book, etc. and that will generally suffice as notice to you. Is givng employees direct notice preferable, yes but it is not legally mandated for them to do so.
