Yes, with the proper court order, a creditor (or a collections agency which purchased the debt or is acting on behalf of the creditor) can levy, sometimes called garnish, your bank account(s). They cannot garnish your wages, or take a porption of your salary or other income from employment--most states allow this, but South Carolina does not. However, creditors and collections agencies in South Carolina still have most other remedies available to them, including looking to your bank account. Since it take an extra step--going for the court order--which is not expensive but still will require some staff and/or lawyer time, plus some court costs--if the debt is small enough or it look like you have little in the account, they may not other doing this; however, it is an option available to them.
