I did not invite the person my friend brought, as far as I knew it was just going to be him coming over.

If you had a friend come over with an uninvited guest who supposedly stole your roommate's laptop, the person who stole the laptop would be ultimately legally responsible for making good to your roommate not you or your friend from a legal perspective.
However, to make things good with your roommate, you and your friend should do everything possible to get the laptop that was taken back for your roommate including making a police report and even offering to assist in the payment of money for the purchase of a new laptop.
