Since your insurance was cancelled prior to the accident, the insurance company will not provide you with coverage for that accident.
If the accident was caused by the problem that "could hinder performance" of the brakes, you could file a lawsuit against the manufacturer for negligence to recover the amount of a monetary judgment against you from the accident.
