I recently leased an apartment. The tenants in several apartments below me are constantly fighting/screaming at each other at all hours. They are very intimidating to me because I’m of a different ethnic group than they. I believe there is criminal activity occurring but I haven’t called the police for fear of retaliation. Do I have grounds to be released from my lease? There are 10 months left.

Unfortunately, based on what you write, you do not have grounds to be released from your lease. The lease is a contract between you and the landlord; the activities, even disturbing or criminal activities, of third parties, like those other tenants, do not provide grounds to terminate the contract. So long as the landlord is honoring his/her obligations, you are bound to the lease.
If you suspect criminal activity, the correct recourse is to contact the police.
