If you were at fault in causing the damage--that is, the damage occured due to your negligence (or unreasonable carelessness; for example, driving too fast, texting or talking on a cell phone while driving, going through a stop signal, etc.) or intentional bad act (e.g. you deliberately hit something)--then yes, the employer may hold you responsible for the damage. If you do not pay voluntarily when you are at fault, the employer would have the option of suing you.
