It depends. Doctors can keep you a limited time if you are a danger to yourself or others. You should contact an attorney if you feel you have been kept past the usual 72 hour hold. You may also wish to contact family to arrange transfer to a 12-step in house program; it may make discharge from the hospital quicker.
