The Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies provide health insurance and related services to more than 900,000 members in Wisconsin. The company provides individual plans as well as plans for small and large groups and Medicare recipients. It also offers dental benefit plans, health savings accounts, and short-term plans for people temporarily without health insurance. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Wisconsin traces its beginnings to Wisconsin prepaid insurance plans that began in the early 1940s and to an HMO plan organized in 1971 that is today known as CompcareBlue. In 2001, the company become a for-profit company and merged with United Wisconsin Services to form a new entity which in 2003 became a part of the WellPoint family of companies and is known as Blue Cross Blue Shield of Wisconsin.
