Medical payment coverage, or PIP coverage as it is called in some states, is an optional insurance coverage under the auto insurance policy. There is no requirement that it be carried. If you are in an accident and a passenger is injured in the accident, you may be responsible for the injuries. If you caused the accident, then your passenger can file a claim against you. This would be settled under the bodily injury coverage of your policy, up to the policy limits. If you were not at fault, then the insurance for the other driver would be responsible for any injuries to you and your passenger. This would again fall under the bodily injury coverage for the other driver.Medical payments coverage can be used in addition to the bodily injury coverage under an auto policy. There is no requirement of fault for that coverage to apply. It will pay on a per person basis, and it includes you for injuries.
