About a week ago I received something that a friend stole for me but I don’t want it and never did.

If you refused the item, you'd definitely be safe. If you accepted it, bid the person good bye, then called the police promptly, you'd almost certainly be safe. Having had the item for a week, it's not quite so clear--there's a reasoonable chance you can do what you propose, but it's not impossible the police would conclude you accepted stolen goods then subsequently had a falling out with the thief. You should consult with a criminal defense attorney, who can make a detailed evalution and recommendation based on the circumstances, and who will know how best to approach the police and contact  them regarding this matter as well. Good luck.
